Following their face-off against the Boston Celtics last year, the Dallas Mavericks’ odds of returning to the NBA finals now seem like a fading aspiration instead of a likely reality. In an abrupt announcement, Dallas has revealed they are trading former player Luka Doncic– last season’s leading scorer– to the Los Angeles Lakers as part of a surprising multi-player trade- to the glee of some and the chagrin of others. The Luka-sized hole in the Mavericks’ roster could imperil their championship prospects this season.
Dallas fans’ patience is beginning to show cracks. On February 2nd, Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison proclaimed, “I felt good about it [the deal] making sense as to where we’re trying to go” in relation to moving Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to Los Angeles in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round draft pick. Dallas’ management is correct to sense that their decision should be judged by whether this trade pays off: it has given them an intense all-defensive centre in Anthony Davis and Max Christie, which could possibly turn them into title contenders. However, whether cracks will turn into canyons remains to be seen.
