At a recent airshow in India (Aero India 2025 in Bangalore 10th-14th Feb), two of the world’s most advanced fighter jets (the US’ F-35 Lightning II and Russia’s Su-57 Felon) captivated audiences, reigniting discussions on global air superiority. The event, which drew military officials, defense analysts, and aviation enthusiasts, marked a rare occasion where the two fifth-generation aircraft were displayed in the same venue, offering a glimpse into their respective strengths and strategic significance.

The Lockheed Martin F-35, a cornerstone of U.S. airpower, is deployed in multiple variants (F-35A: conventional takeoff and landing, F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing, F-35C: carrier variant). Its integration of advanced avionics and data-sharing capabilities allows it to operate seamlessly in modern combat environments, making it a highly sought-after platform in international defense circles.

On the other side, Russia’s Su-57, developed by Sukhoi, showcased its agility and manoeuvrability, traits that distinguish it from its Western counterpart. Unlike the F-35, which prioritises stealth and electronic warfare, the Su-57 emphasises aerodynamic performance and high-speed engagement.

The presence of both aircraft at the airshow underscored the ongoing geopolitical competition for defense partnerships, particularly in India, which has historically maintained a diverse military procurement strategy. While India has strong defense ties with Russia, recent engagements with the U.S. signal a growing interest in Western fighter technology. The country’s decision regarding fighter acquisitions will be crucial in shaping its air combat capabilities in the coming years.

Beyond military implications, the airshow highlighted the technological advancements shaping modern aerial warfare. With both jets representing the pinnacle of fifth-generation fighter design, their side-by-side display provided a rare opportunity for direct comparison, fuelling discussions about their respective operational advantages and potential battlefield roles.

At the time of writing it has been confirmed that Algeria will be the first export customer of the Sukhoi Su-57.
