Trump’s Gaza Gamble

The Gaza Strip continues to be a critical region of conflict. U.S. President Donald Trump recently proposed a plan to redevelop Gaza into a secure and modern area by claiming authority in the region. He proposes the relocation of Palestinians to neighboring countries, including Jordan and Egypt. The proposal has been widely opposed by regional governments.

Saudi Arabia rejected Trump’s proposal, stating that Palestinians have the right to their land. The Saudi government also rejected a suggestion made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Saudi Arabia could offer land for a Palestinian state; the Saudis were firm in that the Palestinians are welcome but their homeland is Palestine. Egypt also condemned the proposition, classifying any forced dislocation a breach of international law and an influence on regional stability.

Jordan has likewise opposed the relocation of Palestinians. Jordan's King Abdullah II stated that Jordan opposes the proposal and called for a "regional approach." However, Jordan has accepted the provision of treatment for 2,000 Palestinian children; he stressed that this was a humanitarian act and not endorsement of the plan.

The proposal has sparked a broad debate, including over whether the plan as currently structured would undermine Palestinian sovereignty or regional stability. Despite Mr Trump claiming that it is a permanent solution, most Arab and Muslim states have rejected it on legal and humanitarian grounds.

Meanwhile, Messrs. Netanyahu and Trump unveiled an ultimatum: If all 67 hostages still being held by Hamas are not freed by Saturday noon, Israel will relaunch its military offensive.
